Biography:	Born in Montreal, Canada, Sylvia Tupper studied Fine Arts in Toronto, majored in sculpture with a minor in printmaking. She comes from a very creative family. Her mother is a watercolorist who lives on the East Coast. Her great uncle Eugene Hamel is a renowned Canadian portrait painter of the nineteenth century, his works are found at the Musee National des Beaux-Arts du Quebec in Quebec City. Her grand father Earl S. Tupper designed and created a household product used in every kitchen, the world famous Tupperware. She continues to pursue her art career in the medium of oil painting the Landscapes of her new home state and Still-Lifes in pastels and charcoal/conte. She completed her graduate studies in the spring of 2009 in painting at The Laguna College of Art + Design.
Artist Statement:	Presently I am working on Still-lifes in intimate spaces; spaces that are staged to present these objects that I have collected from various places in my travels and home life. The setups are deliberate and calculated to use nature in a confined space. Others overlook many of the objects that I have chosen; I have collected these creatures, placed them in situations with specific lighting to have the viewer come in closer. The items chosen for my drawings were all, at one time, living. They represent a part of my life. Once, upon seeing the disappointment in my son's face when his favorite fish jumped out of his aquarium and was found dried up on the floor behind the tank stand, I asked if I could keep the dead eel or bichir (lungfish) to add to my still lifes. On another occasion, while on an outing, finding a moth or dragonfly dead of unknown causes has saddened me but has not stopped me from adding them to my collection. These many-deceased creatures have found sanctuary in my collection and I have added them to enhance my still lifes. As an artist, I have chosen to give these creatures life in these staged intimate spaces.
