Biography: Noel Madrid is a California painter. A CSULB graduate of 2010 he is currently working to build a portfolio in the pursuit of a masters program . Drawing on futurist and expressionist tradition, his works deal with various ways of fracturing the observed landscape.

Statement:  A semblance of landscape is persistent in my work. Focusing on memories of familiar places, I work within a stream of consciousness to create spaces that are fractured yet loaded with imagery. Although some images may be more recognizable than others, it is the expanse not the specific that is significant. I work with imagined, often exaggerated color. When painting, I may close my eyes and ask "what would come next?" Using a variety of media: ink, charcoal, graphite, acrylic and oil, I Work simultaneously on large drawings and paintings; the distinction is not always clear. Color and line vibrate and blur coming into focus now and then to suggest imagery. Objects become stacked and compressed in shallow space. Much like the reconstruction of memory, spatial understanding and intuition intersect on the painted surface to create an emotional response.I try to act with an expressionist sensibility, combining physical experience and a wandering eye with a reckless hand. When exploring the emotional connection I have to my personal landscape, I find that architecture and natural forms maintain a lasting impression on my psyche. Much like Van Gogh's cypress trees, aspects of the landscape supplant living figures taking on a liveliness that rivals our own.
