| | Biography: | Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, I attended art classes as a child and a teenager at the Carnegie Museum and then attended Carnegie-Mellon University. I moved to California after graduation, drawn by the ocean, the color and the light. I have been painting, drawing and working in mixed media ever since. In 2000 I began making monoprints, becoming enthralled with the magic of multi-drop printing.
| | Statement: |
I am an abstract painter who has felt compelled to make marks all my life. My primary love affair has been with color. Being able to surround myself with it, explore it and indulge in it, gives me an almost visceral sense of pleasure. I work spontaneously and intuitively, and love creating rich, evocative surfaces. I see the surface as a place of meeting--where the painter and the viewer meet, where what is below can only be felt and hinted at, and where the conscious and the unconscious meet. This past year's work has reflected transitions in my life, and, after two trips--first to Laguna Beach and then to Bali (much to my own surprise), I began painting the ocean. The title of that series, "Lost at Sea," captures the sense I have sometimes had this year. But focusing on the horizon as I do in these paintings, I trust in my process and know something is emerging. |
