| Statement: | Imaging The
World On Canvas
People's first reaction when walking into our galleries is puzzlement. We
enjoy letting them take a while to figure out what they are seeing.
When we tell them that the work starts with a photographic image, they
usually say: "no way." Then they want to know if I paint over the image
on the canvas. No.
These responses delight me. From the start, I wanted to exploit the best
of two worlds: fine art painting and photography.
While trained as a photographer, I realized that my classic photographic
work remained in print, portfolios or languished on coffee tables. And
so I set about to make photographic images feel like paintings, taking
inspiration from the great modern artists, so that people could enjoy
the pieces on the walls of their homes or work places.
To achieve the vibrancy, clarity and sharpness of the printed images,
from the smallest work to the largest, which can be as wide or high as
five feet, I use the highest quality lenses, work strictly from large
RAW files, and employ a variety of specialized software applications. As
few changes are made to the digital file as possible to avoid
pixilation. Once processed, the images are printed on canvas using
archival pigment ink.
I travel the work seeking the most visually intriguing places. Each
presents its own colors, lighting and therefore mood. These journeys
have taken me to the heights of Mt. Kilimanjaro and the Andes, the icy
blue vastness of Antarctica, and the orange larched expanse of Siberia. I
circumnavigated South America, cruised the Mekong, Irrawadiy and Amazon
rivers, traversed the textured countries of North Africa, Central Asia
and the Middle East, and touched down in the great world capitals. Six
continents. The seventh this spring as I travel through New Zealand and
Australia.
The work is best viewed where they really live, on canvas, in the
galleries that show them and on the walls of private collectors and
corporate offices.
