| | Biography: | After raising a family and retiring from a 28-year teaching career in Special Education, I discovered a new passion in painting silk. I've spent the last 15 years learning about silk, dyes and a few techniques. I live in Laguna Beach, CA. where I devote a great deal of my time to painted silk as an art form. I am honored to serve as Vice-President of SPIN, Silk Painters International organization
| | Statement: |
I call my paintings "silkweeds" where colors and lines are neither inside nor out. They simply encounter one another. Most of the time I use Jacquard silk, which has a pattern or texture woven into the fabric. The dyes adhere differently to the raised pattern detail creating an added dimension. Since I'm painting "wet-on-wet, the colors merge or encounter one another thus creating even more colors as well as layered combinations. I have also incorporated the ancient Japanese technique of Shibori to achieve additional layers. After steaming the piece I create a scarf, a stretched canvas, a hanging or a set of note cards. Scraps have been known to reappear in odd three-dimensional pieces. |
