Featured Artist Detlef Gotzens
During his 40 years working in glass, Laguna ART Group artist Detlef Gotzens has done important restoration work in churches and on Parliament buildings in Ottawa as well as collaborating with architects on contemporary designs. Recently he has concentrated on his sculptural work with breathtaking results. Massive and powerful in design with vibrant colours, he combines his multilayered glass with metal, wood, and stone. Experimenting with both hot and cold techniques he has found a very personal vocabulary of form and expression. He is now presenting the Montreal public with an impressive body of work in glass and mixed media, accompanied by some of his paintings.

LAG Artist Prisilla Nelson: Mural Gift to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta on Day of Service Children's Healthcare Day of Service
LAG Artist Prisilla Nelson: Mural Gift to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta on Day of Service
Children's Healthcare Day of Service
Accomplished
artist and Laguna ART Group member Priscilla Nelson is gifting a
heart-warming mural to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) in
partnership with a group who is near to her heart. This unique group, to
which Nelson and daughter Avalon are very fortunate members, traveled
with Oprah on her now famous trip to Australia and is aptly working
together as Winfrey’s “Ultimate Viewers” in an ongoing effort to pay her
kindness forward.
Through her company, nelsonart.com, Nelson has joined with fellow
“Ultimate Viewers” to create an Ultimate Day O' Service (UDOS) as a way
to bring love to the community.
Nelson has previously gifted 10 murals during the span of her 30-year
professional career, primarily to child-centered organizations. While in
talks with Children's, Nelson realized that gifting her mural as part
of UDOS made perfect sense, especially when doing so would reunite some
of the “Ultimate Viewers” with whom she has formed a truly dynamic bond.
“The opportunity to work with such a special group of people in
providing a little joy to the patients and wonderful staff at Children's
is an amazing honor for each of us. The project also happens to
coincide with the 9/11 remembrance weekend, so, this project is more
poignant in that we get to add light to such a dark time in our
country’s history, and for that, we are grateful,” says Nelson.
Work designing and preparing the outdoor mural site is already underway,
but the Ultimate Day O’ Service is scheduled for Saturday, September
10, 2011.

A Day at the Sawdust Festival
Visiting the Sawdust Festival on a sunny Sunday afternoon is the perfect summer
activity. Founded in 1965 the Sawdust Festival is three acres of art. Everything from
painting, sculpture, clothing, jewelry, ceramics to glass blowing. You name the medium
and most likely the Sawdust will have it. Strolling from booth to booth talking with the
artists and other fellow art enthusiasts can make you hungry. The festival has some
great dinning options from sandwiches and salads to tacos and pitas. Get your food
to go and head on over to one of the stage's to listen to some live music. This visit we
were treated to the Ken Garcia band playing a mix of folk music with a Hawaiian and
Latin flare on the Main Stage. The Main Stage is nestled near the trees making it a
perfect time to take a break in the shade.
After you have rested for a bit continue wandering, maybe this time with a wine,
beer, or coffee in hand. Many of the artists are in their booths and occasionally do
demonstrations. During this visit we were lucky enough to watch Laguna ART Group's John Eagle work on
an oil painting. He describes his work as "en plein air" which means done on location,
in the open air. His paintings have an impressionistic feeling as the undiluted paint
is dabbed onto the canvas using mostly vertical brush strokes. As the artists says "it
creates a mosaic effect, with form and movement seen from a distance rather than up
close." It was such a treat to be able to talk with the artist for a while and hear about his
Sawdust experience. Congratulations John on 20 years at the Sawdust! We hope to see
you for 20 more! John's work can be purchased at www.lagunaart.com/John-Eagle.

| " Nature may be organized, but life itself is random and
mysterious. Whether photographing the natural world or our man-made
environment, I am looking for images that transcend the moment. I want
my photographs transform reality as the casual observer knows it.
Color is an expression of positive emotion in my work. The beauty and
diversity of the colors in our world are a source of inspiration in my
work. Through color, line, shape and texture, I express my wonder about
nature and things in everyday life. My images are different from the
view of the casual viewer; they look deep into the essence of a flower,
tree or even a piece of fabric." -Ellen Cantor |

natural world, where color, shape, movement are special inspirations
for me, as well as the personality of animals that can be expressed in
their portraits. I enjoy sharing my interpretations of these things as
expressed in my sailboat paintings and horse portraits." | . -Diane Olsen
